"They Call Him "Mr. Sheeler"

  • 8 photos for sale Buy a Photo
  • They Call Him "Mr. Sheeler". Youth football coach, 73, still offering life lessons by way of the gridiron. Some days, the white boy and the black coach would wait out the rain in the man's Ford Thunderbird, where they talked about football technique and how the boy was improving, even though he had never played organized ball. Because of the coach, the boy's nervousness about his lack of experience and playing on a mostly-black team, vanished within the first few practices. Ernie Sheeler, he recalled, treated him like a player - not a "white" player. As they waited for the rain to stop, or for the boy's mother to arrive, Sheeler would regale him with recollections about his own playing days as star at McKinley High School in the 1950s, and his stint as semi-pro player with the Massillon Stars. But they also talked about life. Read the rest of the story by CHARITA M. GOSHAY in CantonRep.com
